A backtest has one job: tell you whether a setup would have made money if you had traded it mechanically. This is how to run one honestly, before you risk a cent.

Most traders do not have an edge. They have a story they have not tested yet. This guide is about testing it properly.
Before you test anything A setup is only testable if it is mechanical. Every rule must be answerable from the chart with no judgement: exact entry, stop, target, and filters. If the rules contain words like "strong" or "clean", you do not have a setup yet, you have a feeling.
Manual backtesting Stepping through historical data bar by bar, logging every trade your rules generate. Done right it is slow and honest; done badly it is a highlight reel. The guide covers the traps: hindsight labelling, skipping the ugly ones, trusting the replay engine's fills, and ignoring costs.
Automated backtesting Coding the strategy removes discretion but buys you quiet new ways to fool yourself: lookahead bias, fill assumptions, counting bugs, overfitting, and filtered headline numbers.
Reading the results Trade count, profit factor, win rate, expectancy, max drawdown, and regime breakdowns: what each one actually tells you, plus a full checklist to pressure-test any result.
A passing backtest is a statement about the rules. The moment a live human executes a tested system, a second variable enters. Separating the two is the job of the companion guide, The Execution Audit, in the Pro tier.
Past performance is not a guarantee of yours.
The numbers above are real and they are still history. A thin, mechanical edge that works in today's regime can fade. Install it correctly, size it properly, and expect losing days.
The record is public. The price, the files and the exact settings are behind a free account.
